My passion for coffee (which is great enough that I have even joined an organic coffee club!) and antique coffee grinding gadgets started at a small local coffee shop at Lake Tahoe. It occurred over 10 years ago, but I can still remember the fragrance of coffee that was so calming on a chilly winter evening. There was no one in the coffee shop other than us. The shop proprietor pointed out to us various pieces of his collection of antique coffee grinding gadgets and coffee mills displayed on the wall.
The pastime of accumulating antique coffee grinding gadgets is increasing in popularity as more collectors are finding these exquisite and ornamental antiques are also very useful. If you belong to an organic coffee club , and have a lot of coffee in your everyday life then you have all the more incentive to want to start collecting some of these exquisite antiques. Many coffee enthusiasts claim that once you have tasted coffee ground in an antique coffee mill you won’t ever return to a modern electric machine.

If you are interested in antique coffee grinding gadgets, you might want to look into becoming a member of the Association of Coffee Mill Enthusiasts. The association publishes a quarterly newsletter with pictures and articles of antique mills, advice on restoration and want ads.
There are a number of uses for coffee grinding gadgets more than milling beans for coffee, and in fact some people keep multiple coffee grinders on hand for miscellaneous purposes. This is great to know if you are an occasional coffee drinker, as opposed to an organic coffee club member like me! For cooks who work with a vast range of ingredients and prefer to start from scratch with basic ingredients, a coffee mill can make a great all purpose grinding gadget for the kitchen, and it may be more cost effective than products produced for specific tasks like milling flours or grinding spices.
