I am thinking of going to an organic dog food right now due to the mess that is going on now. Noone really seems to know what is going on with the pet foods and I would rather pay more and be safe.
So any brands and where I can get them would be of great assistance thanks so much.

Wellness is good, it may be hard to find organics right now (because of the demand), most of the big pet supply chains stock organic foods. But be careful and read the labels, some organic foods have wheat gluten in them too.
Also look for “human grade” or “human quality” ingredients.
You could just shop at normal groceries for your dog and do research to make sure what people food you can’t feed to dogs. I guess that’ll just be home made dog food.
But obviously standards for pet food will never be same as people food out in stores.
Karma and Timberwolf Organics are availble throughout the country. I will post links to suppliers.>store locator>
The wheat gluten responsible for all the contamination was imported from China. Just another way for dog food manufacturers to make more profit from inferior products.
You will be safe to buy a PREMIUM food, such as Canidae, Innova, Natural Balance, Timberwolf Organics, California Natural, Karma, Solid Gold, or Wellness.
These are made from HUMAN grade ingredients, and you can trust that they are safe..You won’t find anything that is safe at your grocer’s, or department store. Just go to your nearest local (not chain) pet supply shop
Innova and California Natural are good. Go to for distributers.
Artemis (human grade ingredients, all natural and holistic)
Wellness (I’ve heard very good things about it)
Canidae (I feed this and I’m very pleased. My older dog is more active and healthier since I switched)
All are good, all have websites with more information and distribution information.
google that.
Any natural store like Whole Foods, Hannofords, Trader Joes and Stew Leonards carry organic dog food products. Specifically I went to Trader Joes yesterday and picked up a medium size bag of dry dog food as they are currently not selling wet food for legal purposes and I spent around $5. I carefully read the package first and all of the ingredients are all natural and organic. But another safe method is to make your own dog food. I’ve often mixed brown rice, olive oil and lean ground beef or chicken for my dog. I simply measure out the same amount that I currently feed my dog and replace dry food. Although it can be time consuming to prepare a meal for your dog twice a day, you can pre-cook all of the ingredients. I simply put them pre-measured in tupperware, toss them in the refrigerator and mix in a teaspoon of water when they are ready to be served, put the container in the microwave for ten seconds and serve my dog a healthy, home cooked meal.
I feed my dog Blue Buffalo brand dog food. It’s made from human grade ingredients and I buy it at PetSmart.
Organic does not necessarily equal better or safer. For instance, synthetic chemicals can not be used on certified organics, but natural chemicals still can, and natural chemicals can still be toxic. And bacteria such as E. coli will grow when the handling conditions are right, regardless of how food was grown.
Your best bet is to be informed, during this recall or any other, be it pet food or human food. Right now, information about the menu foods recall can be found at:
with a list of recalled dog products at:
and a list of recalled cat products at:
The known affected products were from Menu Foods, who only produces wet foods. Other companies have voluntarily recalled products containing wheat gluten from the same source as the contaminated wheat gluten
Most of the foods listed above are good foods. For a complete list google Whole Dog Journals 2007 Food List. It will give you a list of about 20 dog foods you can choose. You should be able to find any of the premium foods at a small local pet store (PetCo & Pet Smart dont carry that many premium foods)
Someone answered you by saying that all grocery store dog food is junk — and this is mostly true. However, Kroger and Harris Teeter, Von’s and others have added some decent natural selections that have neither by-products nor corn, wheat, soy additives. Lassie Natural Way is one such food. Also, Newman’s Own Organics is terrific food, but harder to find. There is a store locator on its site, however.
Good for you for taking the best care of your dog!
